Mentoring Programme
At the start of every new academic year, you can participate in the Mentoring Programme for Women and Minorities in Philosophy.
If you are an honours or a conversion diploma student who identifies with an under-represented or disadvantaged group in philosophy, you’re warmly invited to participate. You’ll be matched with a PhD student mentor of similar or same social identity whom you would meet twice a semester to give you the opportunity to talk to someone who had to go through the same journey as you, to share experiences and to discuss how we can make philosophy a more welcome place for everyone.
The applications for the 2023/2024 mentoring programme are now open.
What is the mentoring programme?
Philosophy still has a lot of catching up to do in order to become the inclusive, diverse and welcoming discipline that we want. It is sometimes quite difficult for women, people of colour, people with a working class background or coming from poverty, to “get into” philosophy. It’s just very difficult to know the social codes, have the same self-confidence or connect through similar stories to other philosophers when you have a very different background than the majority of philosophers.
We want to start working on this by giving you the opportunity to meet and talk to someone who has been through the same, to share experiences and to discuss how we can make philosophy a more welcome place for everyone.
The mentoring programme will not primarily provide you with additional philosophical support. Your mentor will not read your essays or discuss your dissertation with you. Your mentor will talk about how it feels like to do philosophy, what your experience is, when you felt uncomfortable, share her own stories about entering philosophy, so that you can exchange and share your experiences as an under-represented group in our discipline.
Who is it for?
The programme is for the support of honours and conversion diploma students belonging to disadvantaged or under-represented groups in philosophy only. This includes, but is not limited to
The information you give us will only be read by the organiser of the programme, Camille, and will only be used to match you with a PhD student with a similar social background, and nothing else. If you’re interested in who’s mentoring, please take a look at our people page.
